WTOP news reported on in increase of children being removed from homes in Montgomery County. This issue has been in the news following the murders of two children in Germantown, in which the children's mother and another household member were charged.
The article provides quotes from experts in the field, encouraging citizens to report incidents of possible child abuse and neglect. The social workers who investigate such reports have a nearly impossible task-how to determine which children are safe and which are not. To make these determinations, social workers interview parents and children and to ascertain the reliability of the statement they are provided. Sometimes accusations are falsely made, and sometimes children ARE in danger but the evidence is insufficient. Sadly, I have seen both of those scenarios occur, and I do not envy the difficult job that social workers are faced with.
