Can obese parents be good parents?

Last week, you may have heard this news item about an obese man in Missouri undergoing gastric bypass surgery in the hopes to adopt a child.  The is actually a relative of his, and he already has a child as well.  The court denied his adoption based on his weight and related health concerns.  Could a similar thing happen in Maryland?  In child custody cases, several factors are taken into account by the judge, including the age and health of the parties.  As such, it is possible that the court could find that it is in the child's best interests to not be in the custody of the obese parent.
